SciFi and Fantasy Art The Demon Chained(?) by Lisa Coleman

Right after I saw the movie 'Quills' (which is about the Marquis de Sade in a mental institution) I scribbled down the sketch for this. What can I say, I love chained evil. This final piece is huge, 18 x24 inches, and looks terrible online. On someone's suggestion, I darkened the lines in PhotoShop, I hope I haven't ruined it, it was so delicate before.

It has been interesting seeing different people's take on this picture, After you've formed your own idea about the events here, and shared them with me, go over to my library and read The Demon's Words, to see what I was thinking.

10 Jul 2003	Amujr	Loading... OOOoookkkkkkkkkkkkkaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyyyyy. I read the poem first, so I'll try not to give it away. To me, the picture looks like he got caught by the angels after coming to see her. Now, she must watch him imprisioned for eternity, never losing her love for him. Damn, this makes me a bit philisophical. Did I spell that right? It reminds me of a picture by one of my favorite artists, Crin. Ohh, um, Erin Clark, called grief. Everyone who actually reads this should look at it. It has a similar theme.

It reminds me of the pictures by Titian, where there are so many small nuances and touches of emotion in the picture that the experience of just observing the picture is in itself a pleasure. I also have a small suggestion; use a dark background, and colour the angelic woman in light colours so she stands out from the page, and then colour the demon in middle-to-dark colours, as if the angel is bringing him out from the darkness he is surrounded by and no longer wants to be part of. (SMALL?!?) Truly gorgeous, truly, truly gorgeous.

5 Dec 2004	Rowaan	Loading... I really like it. It's really well drawn. You could use more chains to hold the demon up, though. But, umm... you know, umm... pillars and chains, they don't really stop evil demons from using mind control to make the angel free him. Just thought I'd point that out. wanders away to find a book on demonic mind control Lisa Coleman replies: "I'm glad you like it.! You know I once looked at those chains, and ralized they weren't anchored to anything. So, if you poke around, I think in my library, you'll see he's actually falling most of the time. Also, if you read the story I haven't exactly written yet, the context is that he's been exiled by both heaven and hell, and is falling forever down the axis of the world in the Void. No one in their right mind would get close enough for his "mind control." With one significant naive exception, of course. Besides, he doesn't technically qualify for 'evil.' Not in my world anyway. "

The Demon has used his demonic wiles to enchant the naive little Angel, who has lost her heart to him and hence will be ruthlessly exploited and abused by the Demon to secure his release and his ascent to power. Now I'll click up there to see what it's really about ...
