Sa-WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEET! The intense value scale adds a super-realistic volume and, quite frankly, an eerie sense of realism. The value scale diagonally across the backdrop is a nice touch, I feel because it adds a light source and an environment without bombarding the figure with excess stuff, hence, we, the audience, are allowed to enjoy the figure in peace.
And as a side note, the texture makes me interpret the figure as made of soft clay whereas the sharp veins in the wings make them look like much finer stuff- thin glass or plexi or actual wings.
