"Climbing" by Lydia Thomas

The natives of planat Manticore are not so much different from the original Earth colonists, but over the centuries they have developed a strong muscular build and a skill for climbing.  Which, of course, on Manticore is absolutely vital for survival, given the planet's rather erratic gravitational field and therefore peculiar landscape.  Though there is always some kind of gravity, it is never constant over time or space.  Hence the irregular landscape, mostly jagged stone, and the necessity of Manticorian's skill.  The best mode of transportation is your arms and legs, unless your family is rich enough to own a farriel'an, the peculiar winged beasts native to Manticore that has the uncanny ability to fly through changing gravitational zones.
