Carthoris' younger sister. As anyone can see, this is not finished (shading and details on the skin, more accessories and obviously, the background) but I'm actually working on something else right now so I'll come back and finish her when I get the opportunity. There's no use in asking me why she's naked (or close to) because I'll clarify that right now: people in Barsoom (Mars) supposedly don't wear any clothes, just jewellery and some silks and furs for sleeping. Nope, I don't know why... maybe it's very warm up there in Mars. Who can say? Burroughs wanted it that way and we can't fight the author's view of his own creation. Tara is wilful and very spoiled by her parents - especially her father - but after a dangerous adventure where she is saved by a disguised nobleman (whom she had met before, hated and then of course, falls head-over-heels in love with), the immature Tara learns of life and its hardships, coming out of her trial a more sensible and braver woman. I need to make a lot of corrections in this; I like the pillows and the curtains though.

Great work! The face is strikingly similar to Jennifer Connely (the Labyrinth) You paid amazing attention to detail here. I love all of your figures though; just beautiful!

Ana, would you consider allowing your wonderful tara to be reprinted in an online magazine about Mars? I live in Costa Rica and am publishing an online magazine for expats living here. As you may know, Dr. Franklin Chang, a former NASA astronaut is a Costa Rican who is building a plasma rocket to be used on a trip to Mars. We are interviewing Dr. Chang for the magazine, but we want to have an excerpt from The Chessmen of Mars, featuring Tara of Helium. This is to show our readers an older Mars of the imagination. We are publishing this online magazine with no money, so I cannot offer compensation. Thank you for considering this. --Stephen

:-) Ana Magalhaes replies: "‘Kaor’, Stephen

‘Tara’ isn’t finished, but you’re very welcome to use the image. It was never intended to be sold, so I wouldn’t dream of asking for anything in return, and would in fact be very proud to have it linked to such an exciting report, even if just by proxy – I just have one request: once it’s published, send me the link so I can read Dr Chang’s interview. Space travel is tremendously exciting and important in our development as a species and I really hope I live long enough to see the first manned trip to Mars as a successful endeavour. Thank you for noticing and considering ’Tara’, it’s a huge compliment 2."

Very beautiful. Edgar Rice Burroughs rules!

Thank you Ana. I am laying out the magazine now. Of course I’ll post the link to it here. Did you see the news today April 15 2010 about the Mars mission of NASA? Probably they’ll use Chang’s rocket motor.

Ana Magalhaes is dead on in her depiction of Tara of Helium. ERB describes her having small, round, firm breasts, and yes, everyone is naked on Mars with exposed genitalia. ERB was writing a soft porn peep show for those who possessed the imagination as a 90 page article I have written on "Nakedness on Mars" to appear soon in ERBzine. Thank you. Woodrow Nichols

I don’t recall them having any silks and furs for sleeping. I just remember that they’re naked and wear jewelry. By the way, is this person in the books or did you make her up?

:-) Ana Magalhaes replies: "They do use silks and furs - check the books and you’ll see they do. Tara is John Carter’s daughter and she first appears in the 5th book, "The Chessmen of Mars""

Out of curiosity, why put up unfinished work?

47 Ana Magalhaes replies: "I’ll give you the same reply I’ve given another person who asked the same: t was my intention to replace the unfinished pieces when they were concluded, but I decided to call it quits on publishing new art and made this decision before I could finish the pieces posted here."
