A water creature of some kind. Sorry for the less-than-perfect quality, the scan turned out awful so this is a photograph.

The photograph actually is very nice, as it picked up the texture of the paper adding the sense that this is something like an illustration from an old book. Not an intended effect, I’m sure, but a handsome one nonetheless.

I like this work quite a bit. The reflection in the water is beautifully rendered, as is her face and expression. The shading on the hand and neck, while subtle, makes the difference between realistic depth and a sense of flat colors. Kudos on that account.

She reminds me of hags of European mythology (although she is not particularly "hag"-like). You know, the monsters or spirits that reside in lakes, rivers, or ponds and are typically the result of the drowning of many a wayward soul. In some versions they drown themselves in grief or spite, in others they were murdered by drowning, and in still others they simply live in the waters and use the sympathy of humans as a tool to capture prey. They’re possibly one of my favorite folkloric monsters, and I really enjoy the version you have here.

:-) P. Tiainen replies: "Thank you so much for your comment! Yeah, a hag-look wasn’t really what I had in mind when I painted this, but your verson certainly is interesting and brings a whole new way to interpret the picture... I’m glad you like it 2! "
