I think it could have a bit more contrast, but overall good job on the shading, the expression and the detail - all make for quite an impressive image. ~#F P. Tiainen replies: "Yeah, I’ve read some mixed info about that issue... I thought this version would make the picture a bit more interesting. Thank you so much for your comment!"

It’s mythology, and it’s beautifully depicted with the shading on her robe, rays of light, and that unbelievably shiny, mirror-like floor. Not to mention the ornaments are making me speechless. Wonderful work. P. Tiainen replies: "Thanks, I’m glad you like it! "
| 25 Jul 2008 | Sandra van Iersel | Loading...wow, unbelievable you can do that with pencil! The rays of light seem so real, so does the robe. And you did excelent on the shading. P. Tiainen replies: "Thank you! It took a lot of time and a lot of pencil " | |

Because it makes me think of the contrast between light & dark, kindness & unkindness.
beautiful hearts and uglyhearts, ect. P. Tiainen replies: "Thank you! Yes, I was going for a strong contrast between the different sides and wanted to make the uglier side of her sort of more mysterious by hiding it in the dark. I think according to the myth she doesn’t really have two different sides (characterwise, that is), she’s pretty much evil all the way, or at least her human side is very faint. I just wanted to emphasize the dichotomy in her appearance in this picture. Thank you for taking an interest!"
| 11 Sep 2008 | L. A.A. Hodgins | Loading...My only criticism is that Hel was half Giantess and her un-fettered skin was therefore blue. I always imagined it to be the blue of a stone dead corpse, but I’ve seen it interpreted a great many ways. I realize that this is a grayscale image, and you did a wonderful job on it (really, I have no such control over graphite myself), but I think that her blue skin could have been conveyed a little better by perhaps making her human side just a tad darker, rather than appearing completely Caucasian. P. Tiainen replies: "*Cough cough* Yeah, I haven’t done my homework very thoroughly, I see... I did know the Giantess-part though, so one point for me . Well, live and learn... Thanks for the information!" | |
