Here's the second study for Raikja. For this one, I simply printed out the original scanned-in line drawing on the laser printer and shaded it with a mechanical pencil. It probably would have been faster had I used real drawing pencils, but this was more portable, so I could work on it at the kids' music workshops and during their homework. Usually, I don't go to this much trouble at this stage, just rough in the values and move on to the color drawing, but I had a lot of fun with the grayscale, so it's probably going to be awhile before I start on the color version. We'll see. The original line drawing was done on an 11x14 inch sketch pad. This version fits on 8.5x11.

What music workshops? I feel like I’ve seen this before.

You would have had to have been to a composition workshop at a college in Portland, Oregon, where some musicians were demonstrating different percussion and wind instruments for young composers. Pretty amazing if you were there, but stranger intersections have happened.

Well then, maybe not. I suppose it’s possible such a dark creature could lurk in the imaginations of multiple people. Not all that surprising in my case, really, but that’s... another story. Any drawing I’ve done, though, I’ve not been able to see the details of the anatomy so well as you. Not sure if I should be envious, or relieved, considering its nature.
