While I’ve been illustrating for about 16 years now, and doing graphic design for the past five, I’ve finally been able to devote myself to what I love most... speculative art ( fantasy , SF, Horror, Post Apocalyptic, urban-fantasy, alternate history, etc). I’ve been producing RPG art for over half a decade, mostly for Goodman Games, Fantasy Flight Games, but also for Kenzer & Company, Wizards of the Coast and others; and I crave to do a lot more in this field.

One of my goals is to make a living as a full time fantasy illustrator and I’ve built a comprehensive web site and invite publishers and individuals looking for a freelance artist to check it out, and say hello.

I make my living as an illustrator, and have four kids, so am unable to take volunteer jobs, paid on publication or royalty based pay deals. That said, I am aware of the rates paid in the RPG industry and am able to work within that fee range.

Furthermore, I am used to working with small indie press companies, individual authors, as well as the biggest companies out there and will happily tackle assignments of varying size. If you’ve got a map, a single creature, NPC or scene to illustrate, or a book cover, complete monster compendium or other large project, I am interested in talking to you.

In closing, I just wanted to say that I'm very impressed with the talent shown here. I am glad to be involved.

Regards,

Will

Lovely work all around..out of curiosity what mediums are you working in to get such detail in your color pics?

:-) William McAusland replies: "Sorry it has taken me so long to answer your question , I have been very, very busy with illustration contracts and I haven't had time to get away from the drawing table. never been so busy in all my life, actually.I work in liquitex jar acrylics on illustration board. Most of my book covers are done 16 x 20" and take about a week to pull off, sometimes more if there are many faces or hands."

whoa, both your fantasy art and sci-fi art are amazing. How long have you been a freelance illustrator? And how long does it usually take for you to complete an image?

:-) William McAusland replies: "Thanks, Alexandrea. I have been a freelance illustrator for over ten years now, but only of late have really devoted all my creative energies to this career. It takes about a week to paint a book cover, a few days to draw it up.. but ink drawings take about a day, half of that doing the pencil work, the rest inking it in. It’s 230 in the morning here, snowing, everybody else is alseep. I have been inking fantasy images for Goodman Games all day and all night trying to meet a deadline. I went to your own site and really like it, as well as the selection at your Elfwood gallery. I confess that the anime/manga style wasn’t so huge when I set out as an illustrator, but I see it around a great deal and know high quality examples of it when I see it, and yours is very well crafted and well coloured and inviting. You would certainly make a fine career illustrator if you set forth with a portfolio for various markets, styles, subject matter and web sites. Will"

Wow. This gallery is very amazing! I love the use of color! You're very talented, and have TONS of patience! I can imagine all the characters being in books, they seem to have a lot for you to build on! I think my favorite picture is The Horrids, because the man seems so determined to survive, even though he's surrounded by creatures that are threatening him! I also love the colors in that one, they're very bright, which hides the fact that there's going to be a lot of death soon. Amazing! You should put up some things that you've written — I know I'd read them! I am in awe.

Im sorry for the short previous comment, but I was really knocked out here by your great artwork that you show here! Im just wondering now: why arent there so many unpublished? Does this mean that they are still going to be used, or that they are turned down (which I would call really stupid...).

:-) William McAusland replies: "Many of my earlier works ( pre 2006) were portfolio pieces I did to get work in the fiction and RPG markets. The client work I tried to load here was never allowed, not loaded rather, perhaps perhaps because I mentioned that the copyright to the image was shared between myself and Fantasy Flight Games, or Goodman Games or something. Guess Elfwood is just trying to protect itself, even though I alway gets permission from clients to post my art assignments. Many companies encourage me to promote work I do for them because it is just good, free, publicity for them too.

I think it is also great for other eldfwoodies to see published work here, gives them an idea of what sells, what is possible, and what to improve on and add to themselves.

RPG much? Me too!

:-) William McAusland replies: "I am working with some other gamers on an independent RPG system and a setting called The Mutant Epoch, so we test play a ton. Tabletop RPGs are the best thing I have ever encountered for fostering one’s inner creative growth and imagination, since so much of the evolving game session is seen in one’s minds eye. It’s like being in a novel where YOU are one of the main characters, however in this novel, there is no guarantee that the hero will make it... which of course adds to the thrill. I’ve played computer RPGs and first person shooters, and they are fun, but so limited and they don’t give your imagination near the work out of a table top game.

AS a gamer yourself, Devin, what do you think?

Holy cow! Your art is fantastic! Glad to meet you 1

:-) William McAusland replies: "Hi Uwe,
Glad you like the gallery thus far. I have a bunch of new images waiting in the que but still haven’t shown up yet. Guess the mods are busier than ever, too. It’s been awhile since I loaded to Elfwood but intend to do so more often now. While I like my older work (older then this year that is) I have been looking at some truly amazing imagery at various sites, especially concept art, and am amazed. It seems to me that there has never been so much talent in fantasy and SF illustration as there is now. Is that a good thing? Probably, as I feel I must try harder, experiment with new techniques and media, expand my promotions and seek out new clients and communities.

Anyhow, I appriate the comments you and everybody else has made here. Just had our 4th baby so my free time to post is limited! I need to get drawing and improve my digital painting skills!
WM

PS. Oh, everybody else who reads this, check out Uwe’s gallery! Awesome work there!"
