The dragon's eye;

an emerald oasis

in a sea of black tides

that ripple across

the creature’s back

in the form of scales.

Teeth like thousands

of knives protruding

from the black

gleaming gums,

illuminated as moonlight

cascades down their ridges

like quicksilver.

Many muscles flex

as the creature rises,

exposing powerful

arms and legs.

It unfolds its wings

and stretches them

to their fullest extent;

huge batlike wings

with glossy black membrane

pulled tight against

hard bone which forms

into a single claw that

curves out of the membrane

on the highest point of the wings.

The creature’s tail

slashes about as it stretches;

a deadly scythe-like tail

with a poison tip.

Shadows slowly slink

into the distance

as the solar sphere

comes into view

and sunrise shatters

the night sky.

The creature looks

to the horizon

and takes flight.
