Of the creep that's in your sleep...

A little diddy bedtime story that's told to children to make sure they aren't naughty!

The Mogrem

There is a creature, foul and cold
Who lives beneath your bed I’m told
In shadow dark and damp he’ll lurk
In light, for fright, he’ll turn berserk

But when the sun goes down at night,
When snuffed is all the candlelight
He’ll crawl right from his hiding place
And off your pretty dreams he’ll chase

Creepy, creepy up your spine
Soon your dreams shall all be mine
Sleepy, sleepy go to bed
Mogrem crawls right in your head

‘Course children with a good behaviour
Needn’t fear the oddly stranger
For manners and the polite word
This baleful fellow finds absurd

But naughty boys and girls beware
Your head might ring with his nightmare
He’ll gobble all those nice thoughts down
And etch a smile into a frown

Creepy, creepy up your spine
Soon your dreams shall all be mine
Sleepy, sleepy go to bed
Mogrem crawls right in your head

It’s said that once he’s in your mind
All cheery memories he’ll find
And once he’s picked them one by one,
Your happiness forever gone

Now this foul thief is never caught
But sure enough his lesson taught:
Oh mischief-makers all take heed
Or on your wits the spook will feed

Creepy, creepy up your spine
Soon your dreams shall all be mine
Sleepy, sleepy go to bed
Mogrem feels like getting fed!

I never thought to find a mind as twistered as my own, but ... I bow in humble shame to the most twisted of them all.
Like a childs goodnight lullaby gone terribly wrong.
Good one for babysitting, should the inclination ever strike 2

Thanks a lot for reading!"

If I had kids, I'd read this to them. Very nice! I especially like how you've paced it to sound like one of those old morbid nursery rhymes... with a twist, of course.

18 Adrian H. Wood replies: "Yeah you caught the drift! Evil nursery rhymes... mwahaha. Glad you enjoyed it."

Wow, creepy....yet poetic...I don't know why I'm surprised, I'm fairly sure I knew all along the two could be joined.

I didn't read this when it got Mod's choice, but came across it by chance. I don't usually read things of Elfwood... takes too much energy. Glad I read yours though. Well done, and although itis very late, congrats on the Mod's choice

1 Adrian H. Wood replies: "Thank you very much, really appreciate it! And creepy poetry is the best if you ask me... haunting yet touching and subtle. (Apart from mine that is)"

Children everywhere, beware! Has an old world feel to it, as if its been around a long time. Good for children everywhere, no matter what the culture (well, one that has something like a bed anyway ; ) ) *bows down in poetic awe*

Wow this is great! it makes me think of Bill Watterson's poems, although it is totally original! It sounds like an authentic nighttime poem.

I like this for the reason Suzanne Cockman mentioned: it sounds like something Europeans used to scare their children into behaving long, long ago.

It's a unique piece, with strong discipline. I like it.
