A short, satirical ballad from the point-of-view of the damsel-in-distress. My very first attempt at uploading something... *wince* I hope it works...

Sweep me up

And carry me off

And ravish me, darling,

-Now stop, that's enough.

Now pin back up my hair,

And kiss my milk-white hand,

And make a gallant bow,

And help me up to stand.

And up on your big horse,

Now, there's a good boy,

Just ride off, now, my sweet,

-I'll not become your toy.

(She smiled her sweetest

And waved her silken scarf

And shed a dainty tear

As her handsome knight rode off

She watched his shadow fade

In the setting of the sun...

Then she straightened her gown,

And pulled on her boots,

And 'Fool,' she muttered,

And set off eastward on foot.)

I didn't see the humor in this. I can't quite describe what it is, but the hero isn't, and the fair maiden is bitter and jaded, and there is a certain tragic sadness and darkness to that perspective. I see a little of the coy tease from an other poem in Megan's library in this one too. A kind of theme. Maybe I'm off... I can see the surface humor, but I think there is a darker undercurrent right beneath.

*laughs* I love it when they break the usual stereotypes! And, your form of verse is perfect for the subject. I really liked it. Not too flowy, but absolute-perfect grace isn't needed in humor. Awesome job.

I found this recommended in Woodworks - I'm glad I did. I just love it when someone takes the stereotypes and smashes them with a nice big sledgehammer. Plus it's nice to see the typically dumb as just that. Nice form too - loved it!

I'm sorry, but that wasen't very good at all.
I saw it in the recommended readings at woodworks, and 'humorous' it said.
Nay...

:-) Megan E. McCarthy replies: "Much as I disapprove of anonymous comments, I do agree with this one. I LIKE the damn thing, and I even still think it's funny, 3 or 4 years after writing it, but I sure as hell don't think it belongs in the recommended reading thingy. *shrug* that's just me, tho... *grin*"

Megan; I found this piece recommended in Woodworks, and for good reason. You have made good usage of those words that don't quite rhyme (I believe they are called slanting rhymes. My poetry terms are a bit rusty) and the effect is very good. Keep at your writing! -Mark

nice job!
I got a good chuckle out of this one. :21igh::. why don't they ever realize that just because they give us a hand doesn't mean we're going to give them ours?
