I like to think of it as the long-term sideeffect of severe abuse of magical resources. But in the end I don't know much more about it than you do.

The colors seem less intense on this page. I think it's actually effective... emphasizes the transition from indoors to outdoors.

I can totally understand magikal abuse causing strange effects on the world.
