Typically, Hecate, appeared at the New Moon - or when the moon is not visible at all - but I needed a dramatic foil to the portrait so I made the moon full. Hecate is a poorly understood goddess of Greek mythology and though I've done my research, here is not the place for a lecture in misunderstood goddess figures. Anyway...

The model is me. I rarely do self-portraits, excluding characatures, but when I do, I try to make them count. This is based on a photograph I took of myself a few years ago and I've aged it and brought out the shadows as the original is kind of flat. Pencils. Lots of pencils.

OMG Maya, that's awesome. Some of your best work, to be sure! You just get better and better. Can I have a copy of that??? I'll pay you!

That's a really amazing picture...especially all the shading and the hair. It looks so...real. You're so good at pencil pictures!

:-) Maya R. Hirschman replies: "Photos and models always help. I only recently began working from photos and I find it very rewarding and an excellent way to work on my techniques."

Okay Maya, I need to know what you know about Hecate. We need to have a serious discussion about the goddess in her three aspects...and all that. Anyway, GREAT pic here, awesome pencil skills. Just out of curiosity, why did you use yourself as a model for Hecate, why not some other, more commercially appealing goddess like Aphrodite or the like? Hmmm, these are things I must know.

:-) Maya R. Hirschman replies: "Why did I choose to portray myself as Hecate? Good question. I certainly do not identify with the goddesses of love or war (despite my sometimes violent temper) and I'm certainly not chaste. Hecate is, in my opinion, a very interesting goddess who has been written into a very two-dimentional archetype by centuries of patriarchal scholarship. I'm very interested in 'witchcraft' and its development (or lack there of) over time. I tend to take a revisionist (not feminist, per se) attitude to what I have studied and currently, Hecate has piqued my curiosity. Partly because she's such an unknown and has been diminished from her very complicated beginnings is what has attracted my attention. Feel free to continue this discussion over email, Peter, I'm enjoying it. 2"

Hallelujah! A gorgeous woman in the woods who isn't 62lbs! ^^ Really, if this is you, you're beautiful, and so is this picture. Pencil work, right. 12 I'm so envious of your mad skillz. 2 Keep up the awesome work and alway keep drawing. (See, I'm a band/chorus kid, but I draw on occasion, so, I can understand the moonlighting thing.) -Jei.

:-) Maya R. Hirschman replies: ""Mad skillz" and Me don't usually combine in my head, but thank you VERY much for saying that. "

You seem to like mythology. Me too. *does crazy happy dance thing*. She's amazing! I'm jealous of her good looks as well as your artistic talent!

:-) Maya R. Hirschman replies: "I do like mythology, especially the lesser known stories/characters. Thanks for the compliment."

Very nice and realistic, which is the style I really like prefer. And for "shameless self-promotion," it's definately better than what ppl normally put.

:-) Maya R. Hirschman replies: "Hehehe, thanks very much."
