| 12 Feb 2003 | Christine M. Houser | After looking through your work extensively, it is obvious that you're striving for improvement, and have, from what I can tell in some of the more recent pictures, improved somewhat. That being said, this is not a personal attack on you, but a way in which you can try to improve yourself. It is very obvious you learned how to draw based off of anime. While that works for some, your proportions are far off, and, when there is more than one person (or things, such as the horse), this is glaringly obvious. Your faces, especially the ones in profile, need work. The eyes are typically drawn too close to the bridge of the nose, the chin is generally too small (although that has improved some), and the ears are placed incorrectly. If you draw a curved line starting from the bridge of the nose, and another curved line parallel to that line starting at the septum (bottom of the nose), that's how big a human ear is. An Elf ear would follow something similar (though I tend to draw mine as inhuman as possible). The ears you draw are typically placed too far from the eyes, as well (in profile). Look at a photograph of a person in profile for reference. The jaw-line is not perfectly straight, either. It curves upward towards the bottom of the ear. There are a few more things in your work that could stand improvement, but this is just a general critique on your faces. Good luck, and keep working on it. Melissa 'Rhyein' Gordon replies: "Thank you for the comments, Teeny (You are Teeny, right? I know you're one of Meru and Chris's friends, but I get all your names mixed up). Anyway, thanks for the critique, though I would like to just make one correction. No, I did not learn how to draw based off anime. I have been drawing since I was in second grade, and only just discovered anime/manga art two years ago. HOWEVER, yes, most of my art is very much influenced by the anime/manga style, there is still much more art I have done that is not influenced by this style, and that are not on Elfwood because they do not belong in the fantasy/sci-fi genre for the galleries. As of right now, I am an art minor, and I have a few friends who are professional artists by trade that have been helping me with my proportions, etc. The most recent picture uploaded on this particular gallery is actually going on 5 months old.Again, Thanks for the critique.
