In most Japanese folk tales the fox (kitsune) changes into a beautiful woman who begins by showing tender love towards its lover, but eventually foxes the man and deserts him. The fox is depicted not just as a cunning and plotting creature, but also the woman to be wary of. This pretty maiko is wearing a really elegant kimono with a pattern of birds and cherry blossoms on it. In a typical maiko way, she tucks one hand into her sleeve and holds it to display it to its best advantage.
