That well known and slightly annoying cherub's arrow. It finds us all, eventually...
Across the surf, the miles are great
Golden arrows won't fly straight
Around the world, a streak of fire
Bending into the clouds and higher
Higher still to stars aglow
No more thoughts for jewels below
Only dark of freezing space
Trillion eyes in vacant face
One great orb with twisting hair
Beholds love's shaft with torrid glare
Glint on golden tip and then
Graceful arrow dives again
Down towards the spinning lands
Slipping through a rainstorm's hands
Skipping over twinkling seas
Rattling dying winter leaves
'Tween the dreaming lips of night
Out again into the light
Over mirrored water streets
Through the shimm'ring summer heat
To the place where no hills stand
Northernmost down under land
There at last ambition finds
Broken half of two sad minds
Plunging deep into his chest
Transfixion through his heart and breast
Every breath that now expires
Filled with longing and desire
Quills a-quiv'ring, and the shaft
Now dissolves to dust at last
But the feathers dance and spin
Tickling lovestruck on the chin
Giggling in a cherub's voice:
"Silly dear, you had no choice!
From my arrows, no escape
Blame my siblings, Luck and Fate!"
Shining feather by left ear:
"I am Luck, but have no fear!
Though your love be far away
So far she's in tomorrow's day
Both your hearts are beating strong
Soon shall you meet; it won't be long!"
By the right ear feather said:
"Fate I am, and you be dead!
Now your soul is gripped with pain
You'll never be the same again!"
Laughing feathers, pearly wings
Depart for other mystic things
In their wake a crime divine
A shamelessness that transcends time
A felony upon the world
Immortal sin on boy and girl
A ghostly chain across the miles
At either end but wistful smiles.
