Marika Spijkers

I'm from The Netherlands, I live in a town called Den Bosch. I've been making all kinds of fantasydolls, like fairies, trolls and other creatures since I was 19 years old. The drawings of Brian Froud, who was the creative mind of movies like The Dark Crystal and Labyrinth, inspired me a lot. I was also inspired by Ria Odijk, a Dutch dollartist. My favorite sculpting media is polymerclay (puppenfimo), you can work in great detail with this clay. For some projects I prefer air drying clay. Each kind of modelling material has its own qualities. For those of you who want to try it yourself...I have been working on some free online lessons at my website for the beginning sculptor. There are already some lessons online such as making a head, boots, hands and a wireframe with foam body. :-)

I know you used wool for the troll king but what did you use for the straight hair? I've just doen my first sculpture out of fimo (a faerie) nowhere near as good as yours, but I did the hair with bits of feather so it stuck out everywhere, but I don't know what to use for straight hair. Anyway, your work is amazing! Marika Spijkers replies: "Thanks! The straight hair I used is mohair, this is real hair usually from mohair goats. No animals are harmed by this, they only get a new haircut once in a while. ;-) " 12 May 2004 Volbeda Loading... Wow! You can do really amazing thins with clay. Is that stuff expensive? Keep up that great work! Btw, ik woon in oosterhout, ook niet zo ver van jou vandaan Marika Spijkers replies: "Thank you! The clay (puppenfimo) is not cheap, about 12 euro for 500 gram. But if you just make small dolls it is not so expensive.
