John ten Wolde

I've been drawing pretty much since I could sit up and hold a crayon, but never took my work seriously enough to exhibit it until now.  I'm primarily interested in fantasy, but I am also a long-time science-fiction fan.  I suppose that makes Elfwood the perfect place for me.

With the exception of some books and a few commercial art courses in high school (longer ago than I care to admit), I have had no formal art education and am completely self taught.  But don't go easy on me on that account: I'm looking to improve and appreciate any constructive criticism you have to offer.

Artists that have inspired me since early adolescence are from the old Dungeons & Dragons stable: Larry Elmore, Clyde Caldwell, and the late Keith Parkinson.  Presently I can add Todd Lockwood and Wayne Reynolds.  Other favourite fantasy artists include: Brom, Chris Achilleos, Dorian Cleavenger, and Michael Whelan.  Some traditional artists whose work I particularly admire are: Lawrence Alma-Tadema, Adolphe-William Bouguereau, Luis Recardo Falero, John William Waterhouse, Joseph Wright, but especially Edmund Blair Leighton and Gustave Doré.  Also, I like the works of present-day painters René Milot and Morgan Weistling.
