A mermaid, swimming in a shallow sea. I’m quite proud of the tail, but I don’t think I’ve really conveyed the fall of light underwater. Photo-inspiration: at a site which now seems to have disappeared, BareBoating.com. You know how it is when you see something and you just have to draw it. I’ve submitted a photo-inspired drawing to Elfwood before, but I just couldn’t bring myself to “spoil” it by sticking wings on the figures or something and it didn’t get accepted ’cause of not being fantasy. Pencil drawing, enhanced in PhotoStudio 2000.

First, learn to draw hands. Her fingers look like boneless weenies. Except for that broken thumb. Also you've managed to make her chest look as if she has three or four breasts. The hair does look like it's underwater, as in a mass of seaweed.

:-) Daniel D. Copeland (the Naked Celt) replies: "Since her human half is directly, indeed slavishly, copied from an underwater photograph, that's quite interesting."

Very nice picture, in looking over your gallery I must say this is one (if not) your best. The hair movement is amazing as is the rest of the human half, with the exception of her right breast (Viewers left) the extra line of shading, or form is a little distracting and results in the apparent form of a third breast. For the mermaid "half" The only suggestion I have is possibly moving the dorsal fin farther up her back? Other then that, it looks awesome. Now I just have to learn to draw hair like that....

This is why I told you he have to work on your shading and deliniation. All you're doing is the outline shape of a hand. Look at your own hand. What do you see? Shadows making little lines. Shadows giving it defintion, so it looks 3d. The flash in pictures can wipe that out. Look, photos are of 3d things already. You're just trying to capture the ILLUSION of 3d. You need to deliniate the shapes in your pictures more, so you can add shading without having things blend together, you know?
