This is my interpretation of the title figure in the mediaeval romance, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. One Christmas, a giant who was all green — clothes, skin, hair, horse, everything — rode in to King Arthur’s feast-hall and challenged anyone there to strike him a blow with his axe. He would not defend himself in any way. The catch was that the striker must accept a blow from him, likewise undefended, after a year and a day. Sir Gawain accepted the challenge, and beheaded him with one stroke. The green knight calmly picked up his head and rode away, reminding Sir Gawain of his promise as he went. He’s described rather differently in the poem, but working in pencil I couldn’t figure out how to show that he’s green except by mixing him with another mythological figure: the “Green Man”, a kind of tree-man/nature god, who is probably one of the inspirations for Treebeard in Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings. I think I went a bit overboard on the detail, though. Oh well, I’ll do better next time. Pencil drawing, enhanced in PhotoStudio 2000.

I like how the perimeter of the picture has an unfinished star shape. The twig-like appearance of the horse's coat is great. The only critique I have to offer is that the Green Knight's leg does not seem in proper proportion to his body.

:-) Daniel D. Copeland (the Naked Celt) replies: "Yes, it's supposed to be foreshortened towards the viewer but that didn't come out too well. If you want to know the significance of the shape... well, read the poem."

"Overboard on the detail?" Are you kidding me? This looks like it took you five minutes.

:-) Daniel D. Copeland (the Naked Celt) replies: "I assume you do art yourself in order to make that assessment? Where is it?"

Yeah, stunningly bad. The horse's head looks like maybe a goat. You can barely distinguish the head from... whatever is behind him and the goat's horse tail. It's not just the too-short leg that's wrong with the proportions of his arms and shoulders, too.

I was only going to mention the star shape in passing at the end of my comment but the thumbnail you see as your commenting makes it even more prominent. I'm impressed by just how neatly star-shaped it is. Not just roughly star-shaped, rulers edge star-shaped.

Anyway. I like the textures you put into the horse and it's coat as well, I'll agree that the eye shape is more goat-like than horse, but the actual body is very definitively horselike as anyone who has spent time around horses could see. And quite frankly, it's some sort of plant-horse, it's not going to look like a regular horse. The anatomy is believable and thats what's important.

The man (giant, whatever)actually looks like he's in proportion with himself to me. I don't think his leg looks to small compared to the rest of him. I think he looks a bit small compared to the horse, but perhaps it's just a massive charger.

Anyhow, I quite like this piece, and can see were alot of detail has gone into it. Good job.

I love how you made the entire drawing in the shape of the pentangle mentioned several times throughout the story. 2 (I recently read it in my "Brit lit" class and enjoyed it thoroughly.)

theres something off on the horse’s rear leg on the far side too. And the eye.

how come you can draw birds but not horses or people? they should be the less familiar forms?

what are the random little things stuck all over the "horse"?
