So after tiring myself out learning new stuff for Basilisk, I decided to do a simple piece using only human figures. Well, nearly human. These represent that archetypal trio: the Maiden, the Mother and the Crone. Exactly where this meme came from, I’m not sure. It’s a well-known piece of Wiccan mythology, but Wicca is mostly recycled from bits and bobs all over the place. The Celts had plenty of triune goddesses and gods (the Christian Trinity was first explained way back in the third century by a Gaulish bishop). But I don’t recall any of the Celtic goddesses capturing the contrast of youth – maturity – old age the way the Wiccan concept does. Neil Gaiman’s Sandman comics present the Three Fates as maiden, mother and crone, but I don’t remember Lachesis, Atropos and Clotho being distinguished by age; then again, it’s been a while since I really got into Classical myth, either. Anyway, whatever the archetype means for you, it triggered something in me, and here we are.

Some features have of course been subtly exaggerated. I’ve never met anyone with legs as long as this Maiden, nor with a head as big as this Mother, nor with skin quite as wizened as this Crone. That’s because they’re archetypes, not literal human beings. I used quite a few photo-references; do you have any idea how difficult it is to find pictures of naked elderly women? The only halfway good one I found had rather less hair than this, and I don’t mean on her head. But some unicorn on the ERB has decided that’s pornographic, so I’ve modified my original drawing slightly. As always, it’s a pencil drawing, enhanced in PhotoStudio 2000.

Mr. Now take a step back....,

What is worse, a person getting irritated by an incorrect fact and acting on it (if in a somewhat uncharitable way), or you proffessing your hate towards another human being or a (very large) group of human beings?

You said...
"I think I' wasted enough time and typing space over such an ignorant and rude person..."

Hmmm, yes you're much better than that to spend any time at all on such a diminutive runt. Arrogance. Sounds rude to me.

And in that same quote...
"...such an ignorant... person..."

Clearly you are ignorant, if what you said here...
"The Trinity has been around loooong before Christians or even the Christian faith was born ..."
...means that the "Trinity" was some idea that the Christians adopted. There are no facts to support that; historical, theological or otherwise.

Yeah, sorry, that's just not true.

:-) Daniel D. Copeland (the Naked Celt) replies: "Yes it is. "De Trinitate", by Hilarius. Look it up."

They look like Neanderthals. Except for the Crone, who looks like a Neanderthal zombie. She no longer even looks human.

FUNNY that you all seem to want to connect this with God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit. These my friends are clearly women. And all I have to say is Triple Goddess...Maiden, Mother and Crone!!!!

This probably isn't my favorite picture of yours, but it isn't because of any good or bad drawing on your part, there's just somethign unsettling about the three. I suspect because carttons and such have taught me the maiden is a sterotypical air-headed beauty, the mother is a plump but pretty caring figure and the crone is a loveable cranky bent-over old woman. These three defy that. I don't know how to put it into words exactly, but they set the hair on the back of ym enck on edge.

In that respect then, you have succeeded in drawing a powerful picture.

As a side-note, if they worry me so much, why have I come back to look at them so many times? Perhaps trying to find what makes them as powerful as they are, but also there's somethign about the maidens outstretched hand that pulls you in. And on a technical note, the anatomy of the hand in question is amazing.

Well..Its a good idea. I have a Wiccian friend, who speacks of the three all the time. Interesting that you have portrayed them this way. Why the hair in the arm pits...? Anyways, nice job..I love the way the mother holds them both, linked..

:-) Daniel D. Copeland (the Naked Celt) replies: "Why the hair in the armpits? Because they're spirits of nature, not of artificiality!"
