How Iīve wondered why a soul would only choose to reside in a body made of flesh and not in one of metal, if a human body is just as much a machine as any robotīs? This is my first take on AI, please be gentle! I can only tell you more will be coming.

Robots... How theyīve grown and spread across the earth from the times when I was only a child, when they were merely science fiction. So many movies, so many books written about them. They all had me fascinated and wondering... Would I see the day when this would be real?

I did...

Working robots, companion robots, guide robots, household robots... Theyīre everwhere. They help us make our lives easier, donīt they? Why are some people afraid of them? Why are they so reluctant to show any affection towards them, not even try to teach them, to help them grow like theyīve helped us?

Itīs science fictionīs fault. They donīt make movies about unique robots that can feel or be self aware anymore. All the magicīs lost, being there robots already in everyday life. But throughout the years, hollywoodīs made sure to make society aware of the risk behind giving a robot the ability to feel emotions. Of course, being able to think for themselves might give them the idea that humans have them unfairly oppressed, they might turn on us, conquer the planet and destroy humanity. And so there are now laws that forbid any attempt to give a robot the capability of simulating human feelings and thoughts.

But then again, arenīt humans self aware? Donīt humans feel emotions? Why doesnīt anyone consider why they are really so afraid of a being with freedom to feel if they, too, have feelings of their own? Why, then, arenīt they dangerous? Thatīs just it, because we know humanity too well. Because we are dangerous. Because weīre afraid of ourselves, because a human is infinitely more unpredictable than a programmed machine, because we can do anything, because anything that is remotely like ourselves should be avoided and feared. Ironic. But yes, those robots destroying humanity in science fiction movies are actually so much like us, and many people donīt realise that. We should be more afraid of ourselves for being truely capable of things such as destroying humanity.

But of course, there are those think beyond. There are those who feel just as curious as I do. Does expressing feelings and thoughts really point out to the pressence of a soul? No one ever doubts that on humans. If they look like they feel, then they feel. Just like one self, right? Why would a robot be any different?

Dr.John Gabriel Lone was a man with an obsession. Nobody understood why he would spend all day working at that old warehouse, specially being a millionaire. He had no one to come home to and for what evreybody knew, no real friend to share his secrets with, so no one knew exactly what he was doing in there. But of course, no one really cared either.

He was an old, solitary man who everybody took as a nutcase with his little obsessions, which were all he trully had apart from his multi millions and mansion, almost uninhabited if it werenīt for the groundkeepers and maids, who kept cleaning the house only because they were told and paid to, not because it would actually get dirty and worn from the use.

But Lone was no ordinary nutcase. He had a masterīs degree in robotics and had taken all the courses and attended to all meetings about robot engineering that he could have found in this city and the surrounding. But of course, only he knew that. He talked to no one, he listened to no one and he specially cared for no one except his most precious and ambicious project yet.

Its name was First.

It had no identification code, no category and no actual job but to listen to his master and respond. It had no outer case and no real useful abilities. Lone had spent so much effort and money into it, and still, it wasnīt just what he had expected to accomplish.

Sure, it could stand and walk on its two legs and even run up to 30 Km/h. It could get up by itself if it ever fell. It could understand every word it was told and learn the ones it didnīt know yet with a simple explanation from the speaker and then respond with the most complex of phrases any of its kind had ever achieved. It could recognise its masterīs face and would recognise more if it had ever had the chance to know any. It truely was a remarkable machine. But it still wasnīt what Lone seeked.

He had checked its programming again and again, and it all seemed perfect. It should be able to do what he wanted. Why wasnīt this working?

Lone was desperate. He had tried everything, but it just wouldnīt budge. After all these years he had found himself in a dead end. All this for nothing. He barely talked to it anymore. He was furious and it didnīt seem to give a damn.

Well... It was time to take extreme measures and make it work or destroy it in the process.

"Defend yourself, robot!"

Oh, well... but it was called First for another reason, so don't worry too much1 Who stole your dragon?

:-) Laura Soret replies: "Heard of Eragon? Blue eyed dragon ringing any bells? I wanted to kill Paolini when i first saw the darn book cover at a store. Plus iīve seen some scenes in the upcoming movie that are pretty similar to some i had in mind. Curse this!!!! Still gonna watch it though..."

That's great! Very, VERY interesting idea! About the robots' soul... makes me very curious about the story.
Haven't you read RUR? By Capek? Try it if you haven't. ;-)
BTW, it also reminded me of one old Czech comics I have in one book... it would be long story and I suppose it isn't too close anyway, but, what is interesting, there's also one robot called First!

:-) Laura Soret replies: "Darn it!!! Why does everybody keep reading my mind and copying my ideas!! First my dragon, then first!!! BTW thanks! I got more! Smoochies!"

Hey, I was looking for you in the search engine and I found out that your writeraccount has been published. Nice story! It's nicely wrote and the subject is quite original.
I think that robot's would be like humans, if they were real. You would have some robot friends and some robot enemies. But when you've got a robot as an enemie I don't really want to know what happens.
(Maybe it eats you, or it takes a hammer out of is back and knocks you on the head)
I don't really want to know what happens when they become real. I'm a bit afraid of their strength and their characters.

But I'm also afraid of humans for that reason.
Some humans...

Anyway: -nice story
-good job

There you had it.

Oh wait, i allmost forgot: *first comment dance*

:-) Laura Soret replies: "of course, what they should avoid doing is building robots with "in case of emergency" hammers on their backs. Just leave them inside the buses!! What if the bus crashes and there are no "emergency hammer" robots around? Stupid people!Wooo glad you like it!! Already got more of it, will soon post! And iīm still waiting for your account!!!"

Ooooo...poor guy.

Hm. This is really good. It has left me thinking about robots. I want one, even if they are freakishly strong, fast, and calculating.

"Defend yourself!" Yikes. *Shiver* I want to read more! Moooore!

:-) Laura Soret replies: "Oh, youīll get more alright! Ticketīs weehee on itīs way. *do the wave!!* Iīm so glad you like it!! I got a drawing of the robot in my other gallery, in case youīre interested."

:-) Laura Soret replies: "OOaoo!! I will never listen to crickets the same way again. Yes, that tiredness... Kills me as well. And itīs late so i guess iīm gonna have to *falls asleep and crickets chirp again*"

*droolz* Dear Lord, she has A.I.

You're officially my favorite. DO YOU KNOW THIS?

I <3 authors who <3 A.I.

It's lovely. I REALLY like the narrative voice that you use. Like...Mmm. I don't even know how to explain it. But I love, love, love it. It's so...I don't know. I get the feeling that it's warm, but it's sure to give me all the facts...GAH. I DON'T KNOW.

Just ignore me. I'm going to go play with my microsoft word.

44 Laura Soret replies: "Certainly the best toy ever invented! Wow, I donīt know what to say! You tell sweet lies, nice person! Like me being your favourite! Although i doubt that out of all people i can become your favourite, i thank you for saying that and making my day! Have a hundred cookies!! I honestly canīt thank you enough for saying what i want people to think of my stories. Warm ^^..."

actually, there is a film about a robotboy who was built to love. He lost his mother and went to search for her, he didn't find her. It's a dumb movie but the idea is special.

:-) Laura Soret replies: "Yeeees i saw the cheesy movie. AI, yes? With the freaky kid from the sixth sense? It really was a cheesy movie. I would certainly have done with the first 90 minutes and nothing more. *yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaawn*"

So far so good!
You hooked me.
Ouch! who says fish don't feel pain.

I like the way you started this. i wasn't sure if I was reading the start of the story or if you were just sharing your beliefs on the subject, but it works. ;-)

8 Laura Soret replies: "*strokes the sad fish* Fishy got a booboo? There there *kisses fishy and kicks mean fisher* I was sharing my beliefs on the subject and also starting it! I just couldnīt find another shorter way to introduce you to that idea. I do realise of course itīs not the most interesting way, but what the heck... THx!!!"
