I'm excited to see you starting photoshop - that's my tool of choice. I have one suggestion with you for using photoshop: Layers. Use lots and lots of layers. I'm not 'sactly sure how to explain it to you online, but you use a layer for different parts of the picture and then it makes backgrounds and coloring and such easier to do.
