Same thing as my Bilbo illustration here, I just wanted to draw Tolkien character as I saw them while reading the book. Here Frodo and Sam. Note that «Frodon» isn’t a typo, it’s the French name for Frodo, just like Bilbo was called «Bilbon». As for the name Bagging, it was «Sacquet», the somehow old French word for «little bag». Samwise was replaced by «Sam Sagace», Sagace meaning «fast witted». I found these translation bran much folklore and where a great adaptation. As for the sketch, It was a good exercise to come up with 4 hobbits (as I also draw Merry and Pippin) and have them have different, well defined personality and facial feature, plus the fact that they needed to connect to the image I was having in mind for each character.

Not exactly what I imagined him as, but I haven't seen anyone who's done it like I imagined 'em, so, nice pic ^_^ *first comment swing*

:-) Charles-Emmanuel Ouellette replies: "Try yourself at drawing novels characters the way you see them, you’ll see it’s a good exercise. I would be curious to see that; I really like your work. Personally this is the way I saw Sam and Frodo. That’s what interesting in Tolkien: his description allow us to see lot of very rich image. And for all, many interpretation are well suiting and good. I just wanted to had my personal view of those characters."

Aww, so cute! I love the outfit. I'm not sure why and don't take offence, but the face reminds me very much of Fat Albert....It's adorable though

:-) Charles-Emmanuel Ouellette replies: "Fat Albert, funny, I didn't tought of it that way! But you do have a point. Hobbit are so nice to draw as they can be very heroic abnd still have these childish, chubby and innocent look. Thanks for the comment!"

I think this is a really good picture. I always enjoy seeing how other people imagine Lord of the Rings characters, and Frodo & Sam are my favorite. I'll have to put up some of my own LOTR art sometime... but it's hard for me to draw Frodo the way I imagine him in the book, I just can't seem to put it down on paper. Oh well, I'll keep trying. Very nice picture, keep it up!!!

When I started to illustrate Tolkien I found to my surprise that I had no clear image of the characters in my mind, although I had read the book many times over. So I had to work through many trial and error sketches until I had a better idea of how 'my' Frodo, Sam or Gimli looked like.
How was it for you? Your hobbits look like very distinct personalities. Are they the result of a long working process or did they just jump out of your imagination?
