Charles-Emmanuel Ouellette replies: "I got inspired by Celtic ornementation clipart catalog for that one. C'est de la que vient le coté traditionnel, le tout mis dans une composition plus personnelle. Les références, toujours les références..."

Your art is so beautifully stylized and bold, it looks like the woodcuts in one of my favorite fairy tale books! Charles-Emmanuel Ouellette replies: "Glad you found it has a fairy tales book, for me Fairy tales imagery come directly from there, and I want to have this atmosphere to my work. You couldn’t make me a nicer comment! As you where talking it could do well on a Celtic inspired shield, well, that’s exactly what I had in mind. Take a look at «The Wild Boar Company» group pic, the front character bear it on his shield…"

I seem to have trouble doing random "filler" designs (though your designs may not be fillers) for clothing or such... Is there a technique to it? Charles-Emmanuel Ouellette replies: "Hi Jennifer, glad you like this pic as well! Well, as for the whole ornementation thing, I use a lot of reference to feed me some ideas and patterns shape. I use to open a lot of books around me to grab some drawing twist and shape there and there, curving them to fit the shapes I place them into. For this one, I had a book about Charlemagne featuring photos of medieval ornemented object and a book with a lot of Medieval tapestry. I also often use clipart books (which can be found in most art supplies store) which are full of well themed work to get inspiration, as well as some ornementation and pattern book, made especially to inspire craftmen and artist. I had the chance to find some really cheap one at a used book store.Anyway, hope it get you inspired a bit, and thanks a lot for your many comments!"

Charles-Emmanuel Ouellette replies: "Glad you like I don’t do this kind of piece very often as they ask me a lot of work, but I must say I like the result. As stated above, I use clipart and pattern books to get inspiration and reference for shape and pattern on such work."
