Alongside our own world there exists another, hidden as though behind a veil, a world where ancient and mysterious beings dwell, occassionally the veil between worlds becomes thin and passage between becomes possible. This is such a passage, hidden within a great wood and sheltered by an ancient tree, it appears as an entrance to a tomb from times of old, and perhaps that is what it once was, but long since it has become a doorway to the Otherworld.
This is inspired by ideas in a number of mythologies of a spirit or 'other' world, and the doorways that lead there. In Irish mythology, the god like Tuatha Dé Danann were driven out of Ireland and retreated beneath the hills and into their own world. Over time their stature and power has dwindled into the Faeries we envision today. The hills in which the Faeries are said to dwell are usually burial mounds, after visiting a few myself while on holiday I was inspired to illustrate one of these mystic entrances as though it had been consumed within a wood, but still stood open for those who knew how to find it. Rather than being in a mound I envision this door as simply appearing within the roots of a tree, and perhaps next time it opens it will be somewhere else...
