A questing knight unwittingly stands before an enchanted wood inhabited by all manner of strange creatures of the Faery sort. This picture was very much about the atmosphere of a mystical wood, strange, mysterious, untamed and full of myth and magic, contrasting with the knight who represents the civilisations of men upon the horizon (he's probably from King Arthur's court), but for now he may become lost within it. I love Arthur Rackham, who illustrated a lot of faery based imagery, and I was going for a very similar style, trying to include a variety of odd creatures representing the faery people and utilising a very muted palette.
I wanted them to be quite hidden, I wanted a viewer not to notice them at first and focus on the knight. Unfortunately i didn't really pull it off because it's too light, the foreground should have been darker. I do really like the misty effect and the atmosphere created with the stars etc. This was a picture where I had a very specific idea of time, place and feeling in my mind before I drew it, but it was never going to match up with what was in my imagination as I don't have the skill for that yet, it was a good effort though.
I didn't notice when i first drew it, but the knight is actually really wrong proportionally, his legs are too small, or his top half too big, or something like that... atleast he's only small so it's not too obvious.
