The Winter King celebrates the solstice at a great Yule Feast. He is no ordinary man, but a personification of winter itself, some say he is one of the faery folk, some warn that he is a trickster demon and some believe him to be one of the old gods still clinging to the mortal realms, though he be driven into the dark wooded places of the world. Every year at midwinter he calls together a great crowd of mystic beings to feast through the nights upon enchanted food and drink at his great stone table. If a mortal where to approach his table upon a cold snowy night, they may be whisked away to the faery realms, or perhaps become enchanted by the magnificent food and dine at the feast for all of time, or maybe the entire scene will simply dissapear, leaving nothing but faint music upon a chill wind.
This is a mythological character that I've invented myself based on various pagan yule/christmas traditions and faery mythology, he's kind of my own alternative pagan version of Santa Claus/Father Christmas, and I gave cards with this one out last christmas, but it doesn't seem to sell very well.
It was very tricky drawing the food etc on the table and getting perspectives right and there's probably a lot of perspective based mistakes in it, but I think it works overall. The colours and lighting in this are some of my favorite out of all my illustrations, I feel it turned out really atmospheric in the final image, with the foreground appearing warm and the background cold.
