'And Aredhel bore to Eöl a son in the shadows of Nan Elmoth, and in her heart she gave him a name in the forbidden tongue of the Noldor, Lómien, that signifies Child of Twilight; but his father gave him no name until he was twelve years old. Then he called him Maeglin, which is Sharp Glance, for he perceived that the eyes of his son were more piercing than his own, and his thought could read the secrets of hearts beyond the mist of words.'

JRR Tolkien: The Silmarillion: Chapter 16: Of Maeglin

This is an amazing illustration. It almost portrays the overbearing nature of Eöl towards Maeglin, and Aredhel's acute desire to intervene.

It looks great! Particularly Eöl.

This is a family rarely depicted by Tolkien illustrators. Eöl looks very intense. Aredhel is beautiful and very elven. She seems to focus at something outside the picture, not what is going on between Eöl and her son. I wonder why? Maeglin looks strangely drowsy or stunned, which contradicts with the description of the meaning of his name, 'sharp glance'. Is he overwhelmed by his father's presence?

This is a beautyful pic of this particular family who had such tragic ending. And i really liked your kid version of Maeglin who almost always seems to be painted like this elvish version of grima wormtongue which in some way he was since both betrayed their people but he had a life before that and he wasn't always a creep.
Personally i think he just needed someone to love who also loved him back and not the illfated chrush he had on Idril.
But I am babbling and I should have gone with just a WOW to sum up my reactions but this pic really got me inspired.

Eöl, the typical controlling/obsessive, ended-up-killing-his-wife husband. I remember when I read in this chapter of Maeglin and Aredhel’s escape, all I could think of was "Run! Run!" Anyway, excellent picture, you captured the characters very well.

Damn, even the background horsie looks great...and the trees! Great work! My favourite bit has got to be Eöl’s face though.
