This one was DIFFICULT. One, I feel weird about pastels. What's most troubling is that I can handle them well, and I don't like 'em much at all. But look, evidently they like me. How kind of pastel colors to like me.

Two, this one took a lot longer to finish than I thought it would. This was due mostly to the fact that I had to think about each individual scale in relation to everything around it, because each opalescent scale had to read "opal" in and of itself, as well as help the whole dragon read the same way. It got away from me in some places; there are plenty of confusing bits in this picture even with Photoshop tweaks for clarity.

That's not to say that I'm not jazzed about it. It's FINISHED! Finally finished! There's probably sixty hours in this thing all together, which is about twice as long as I took with any of the others. Needless to say, no more opal-themed artworks for a while.

Prismacolor pencils, metallic paint pen, Photoshop tweaking.

what a well deserved mod’s choice! I’m wondering why you did a second opal, but my birthstone’s opal so I’m not complaining. Your art is so lovely

I had originally planned to make Opal Moon a Moonstone piece, but I added too much orange initially. I liked the way that the colors were working, but I realized quickly that it was NOT going to be moonstone after all. Howzabout another opal? says I. "
