I've noticed your comment, re: Applying to an art college, and as an admissions advisor at a very famous art school here in the states, i would like to reiterate a few key points to keep in mind when putting together your portfolio. First, well executed images are a dime a dozen if not properly organized, clean/professional, and demonstrate strong talent. Second, your portfolio must be a well-rounded assortment of images that demonstrates your ability to succeed in a variety of styles, media, and provide promise for improvement and some boundary stretching. Third, commitment to the arts is key. We often receive portfolios of work that appear to be quick pencil or ink drawings on standard 8.5" x 11" paper. Although some of the work is well down, it can get a bit redundant and indistinguishable from the hundreds of other portfolios we review. Some of this work is fine, but you will win more points if you throw in a piece or two that shows an on-going affair with the composition, and obviously took considerable time in concept and execution. Lastly, we look for candidates who can not only haw their own distinct stylization, but almost demonstrate strong ability it classic drawing. Knowing how to draw realistically is a real challenge, and clear ability to produce accurate proportion, variety, and color is essential. If you are new to art, i would suggest taking some still life and sketching for communication type classes.
None of these comments are specific to you, however, they're great guidelines for anyone to keep in mind when putting together a portfolio. I wish you much success and hope you succeed in the very exciting world or art and design. All the best, kk | |
