The smoke wreathed round my face as I exhaled. Lifting the lit roll to my lips I took a long drag and rolled my eyes in relief. I know it’s a bad habit but nothing could beat stress like a mouthful of cinnamon and almond smoke. Dotted along the wall, glowing tips betrayed my fellow rollers and several alcoves were drowning in smoke.
A sliver of flickering light parted the smoke as someone opened the inn door and walked into the yard. I recoiled further against the wall, searching for an alcove. Another figure appeared at the other end of the yard and walked towards the inn. I tossed away the butt of my roll as I recognized one of the figures.
It was Mega.
“Where are they heading next?”
“I don’t know.”
“Well, you’d better find out before you leave.”
“She doesn’t tell me anything!”
The other figure grabbed Mega and slammed her against the wall, snarling in her face,
“I don’t care. You find out what they are doing or we break off any arrangements. Understand?”
“Yes.”
I stepped out of the shadows and calmly shot him in the back. Mega shoved him away and looked at me. I gestured with the bolter coolly and she fled to the stables. A moment later she reappeared and spurred the horse from the yard.
I kicked the figure onto its back and examined his face. Poor sod. I leapt back as he suddenly surged to life and swung a knife at my ankles. I trapped the blade and crouched next to him.
“Why are you following us?”
“My master’s will feast on your flesh.”
I sighed and grabbed his chin, forcing him to look at me.
“Who are your master’s?”
“You pathetic little human. My master’s race will exterminate yours and dance in the ashes.”
“I’m tired of this.”
I pulled the knife out of my boot and calmly slid it between his ribs. The light faded from his eyes and I wiped the blood on his tunic, returning it to my shin.
