Just some strange thingie I wrote very recently, out of no idea. Improvisation, that's my thing.
I'd say, 'Enjoy!', but it's just not worth it.

The beginning of autumn: leaves keep falling down... and we wither away with them. We are the dryads of these woods. When our trees begin their winterly sleep, we sleep as well. We sleep a dreamless sleep, death-like hibernation. So quiet is everything then... So still is all. No birds to fly over or sit on our trees leaves... No nests to hide amongst our trees foliage. All of us cry when the fall starts... All of us die when the winter enters upon our forest. Oh, how I envy those of warm lands, of no winter or fall to pest them. To cut them off from the fun that summer is. We envy evergreen dryads as well. They, at least, get to keep their looks. We age quite fast. We die every autumn, and reborn every spring. Never the same, always the same. When it's still spring, but close to summer, do we look our best.

I, for one, am not very eager to die. I have lived through 57 springs and summers. This would be my 57 death, but I am tired. I wish, upon a wish, that just once. Just once that I wouldn't have to leave my tree. Why can't I live in warmer lands? Why was I born in here, with.. winter? I shudder at the mere word. I wish my tree had legs, like me, so that we both could run away and live! Oh, 'tis sad. Oh poor me. Oh my poor, poor tree.

'What about us?', all the trees rustle. 'We die as well, but do you find us feeling sorry for that? There is a good reason why we all must die.'

So you say. So you whisper to our ears, but I cannot let my mind stop thinking such. I'm young, quite young for this age. I do not wish to part yet, can we not run away?

'We all must come to an end. We all must take our rest', they all whispered, their leaves rustling.

I fear, for my own part, and for you. What if we never wake up? What if the rest you so dearly talk about, turns to an eternal one? 57 springs and summers is not the most there has been, I would very much like to see another half a century, with you.

'Only another, not a three?'

The more the better, as you do know.

'We know, we know', the trees sang. 'We know so much.. if only you loves listened to us. So much to tell.. so little of listeners..'

You trees don't always have wonderful things to say. We want to be happy, not depressed and moody as you do. We do not wish to drop our leaves just because the apples haven't started to grow yet. Or anything for that matter.

'Hear us, this one time.. we have a matter to tell.' And the trees grew still, they were eager to tell.

Well, come, come. Tell us then.

'This winter, all shall die again. Next spring, none shall wake again.'

Why is that? We wake by spring-time, why do you say such now?

'We have heard, we have listened. While you, our little childs, played your games, did your tricks, we heard... We heard...'

Heard what? Come now, speak up dear trees!

'We have heard.. we shall all be cut down.'

And all grew very silent.

The dryads closed their eyes, and slowly passed away. The trees, once so mighty, now shrunk in their size and power, for the lord had came. The winter all of a sudden had arrived, their talking so eager, none had discovered, they had aged again. Now all lay still, as death came.

I feel very akin to this story; myself reflecting a bit of dryad myself. I am an old soul and feel each turn of the Wheel deeply. I know the leaves and their sad decent, I know spring and it's tremulous joy.
She will rise again as we all do after the ravages of winter...
Bravo!!!
-Amy Thank you! You know Amy, this story reflects me as well.. I like to put a little 'me' in every story I create. The dryad here, in the beginning, was me complaining my sadness. Then it just got that way.. by improvising (that's me best trait ^_^!)
I know they all do, but she's young. Maybe one day a miracle will happen and her tree does grow legs! Well... you never know

Awww, Riikka! This one is wonderful, so beautiful in its melancholy... The sadness lingers through the story, and I like how it all plays out. I found it very captivating... Hey, it was definitely worth the read, and I think... this one is my favourite of yours. No matter what you say 12  In my opinion it came out a little odd, but I'm happy if you're happy! In some ways I like it myself, slightly. And Thanks.
Besides, sad stories are my specialty, you just might have to change that thought one rainy day...

I'm back, finally... I think I'm finally overcoming all this stress and stuff.

Ahh. I liked that dialogue between the trees and the dryad... somehow, I'd thought the trees and the dryads would be one and thus your story was a little... different. I like that too, different is always good. Or wait, now I know! The trees and the dryads represent different sides of the 'soul' of the tree... dryads being the joyous and playful part, trees being the stable and serious part. Or something like that.

Darn, now I forgot...erh... so, like it, great story! The soul is more correct, the dryads and the trees are the same, but still different. One being that contains two. Well noticed, congrats ^_^.
Thankies!

That first line, that's very good. It immediately sets the tone of the piece (though its not the happiest tone in the world, I think its a very truthful one). I like the ending (like meaning I thought you did it well, not that I like trees being disemboweled). You certainly have good flows to your story, I think that the dialogue really added to this. Its a nice simple conversation, but that certainly does not keep it from being meaningful. Though this is fantasy, its also true to the world. Keep up the good work.  Actually, I thought that the first line was slightly odd, not really going along, but I guess I was being too harsh on it. And still sometimes, when I read this story, I get the feeling like I'd want to change one (only one!) particular word, but I won't tell which. (.. disemboweled? Did I do that?)
I like dialogues best actually. Dunno why, but I enjoy writing those. They don't always manage to make the point, but.. mesa like them ! Thank You.

I told you that this one was good, and other people think so too. The tone and mood stay the same throughout the story, and there are much fewer POV and tense changes. Very nice. And therefore: Thank You .

I like this. Very good job at evoking the sad/wistful/mournful kind of mood. Lovely imagery as well.
Great work!  And without even trying all that much.. ^_^ Thanks!

Love this piece. So sad and mournful, but a wonderful contrast of the youthful energy of the dryad and the resignation of the older trees about her. I was brought up surrounded by Greek myth and the tales of the nature spirits have long been my favourites. Many times have I walked in a forest and wondered what the trees are saying! And now I know! Good work!Hopefully they're not saying that when it's spring. Might be a bit too mournful.. But for fall/autumn, yes! So, thank you. 2

That's very beatuiful indeed. I love how you write and what you write. It kind of reminded me of the way Tolkien wrote about the passing of the elves and their magic, never to return. Ver well done.Aww, now.. don't compare me to Tolkien.. ^^ This is just a silly old piece of writing... 2
