| An illustration for the card game Bella Sara's edition Northern Light. The original name for this little horsie is Blodughofi. It was probably changed so that nobody was in doubt that the horse wasn't harmed by the flames. ;) Blodughofi (Blóðughófi) is a horse from Norse mythology. It's rather obscure, but basically it's from the myth about how Freyr got his wife. Frey sent his servant to get the girl, and to aid him on this task, the God gave said servant a sword as well as the horse Blodughofi (the name litterally means bloody hoofs). Blodughofi could walk through fire, and is referred to in the poem Skírnismál which is one of the poems from the Poetic Edda. The runes on the stone behind Blodughofi is taken from the poem. This is what it says: Mar ek þér þann gef, er þik um myrkvan berr vísan vafrloga, ok þat sverð, er sjalft mun vegask ef sá er horskr, er hefr. A translation from the original language is taken from this site. The horse will I give thee that goes through the dark And magic flickering flames, And the sword as well that will fight of itself If a worthy hero wields it The ravens above the horse are Hugin and Munin. The ravens belonging to Odin, king of the aesir, who tells him whatever they see in the world. |
