no real backstory behind this. just an assignment for my 2D art class. the only requirements were to have words and to have mixed media.
here are the media and techniques i used:
1. the pair in the middle were done entirely in HB & 2B art pencils. and took like 3 hours. i thank the heavens for online anatomy references.
2. the celestial figure at the top was pencil on paper, colored with Prismacolor markers, then cut out and stuck onto this paper with clear acrylic matte medium (matte means it's not shiny). i'm really attached to
this a blind solar mage. inspired by BT's "Sunblind".
3. the stars and crecents were cut out of paper that had acrylic paint smeared around with a dry-on-dry technique. (detail is lost in this pic, but it's a really cool grainy effect.) the pieces were then glued on with the acrylic matte medium.
4. the female's stream and words are made from an experimental mixture of ink and the aforementioned matte medium. it's really thick and fun to paint with! and it's totally three-dimensional, so it sticks out of the paper. fun!
5. the male's smoke is the same ink/medium mixture, but watered down quite a bit.
6. the background was gessoed in some sections, then i put blue, yellow, and white acrylics directly onto the paper. i used my palette knife to spread the paint around. impasto!

Wow! That's very interesting and very intreguing! I love the dynamic poses and composition of the piece, as well as the balance - it really catches the eye! All the different mediums put together look fantastic, and I especially love the coloring of the sun!

:-) Rita "FyreNWater" Lau replies: "thank you! the piece came together in a few steps: first the pair in the center, then the sun at top, then the ink "liquid", smoke, and words, and finally the background. XDi was going for balance, as it was orginally going to have a fire & water theme. i found that too cliche, so i swapped it for something else. not sure what it is, but i like it."

That’s nice actually. Liking the expressive sky around the figures.

:-) Rita "FyreNWater" Lau replies: "thanks! it took a while to decide what to do for the background. that was actually the last thing i did!"
