Such tools were usually the only weapons the common people could defend themselves with in ancient times, because the serious weapons, like swords and spears, were often the exclusive province of the military and the nobility. The rake used for sweeping up leaves would not be a very good weapon in a melee, but the rake used for cleaning up manure has very nasty potential as a martial arts weapon -- these things are basically long sticks with the head being a horizontal iron bar with nasty spikes along its length. One would defend against melee attacks using the iron bar portion of the head and the length of the stick, and attack using the spikes and the other end of the stick. Rob Bergerson replies: "I love this, man what a comment.....holy cow i gotta go draw something....." | |
