This picture is part of a trade with the wonderful Ellen Neeskens (link on my main page) whose work, for her age, simply blows the mind. Her work with pencil leaves me agog everytime I look at it.

This picture has been a long time in the making simply because I couldn't decide how I wanted to do it. Those of you who are familiar with Stephanie Puimun Law's work will immediately notice where I got my inspiration, and her tutorial on her www.shadowscapes.com site helped me a great deal. It's far from the polished look of her art, and was kind of a guinea pig piece to see if I could achieve a similar kind of look, but I feel it was a good first practice. I really like the way this has worked, and will tailor the style of painting to my darker, realism paintings in the near future.

As for the characters, they are part of a story by Ellen called Nova Anima: the older angel, Somnius, is the angel of dreams and hope, and sees himself as a fatherly figure to Amo, who has just become the angel of love and pleasure, who sees his guardian in quite a different light altogether. To find out more, you can visit Ellen's gallery... I insist you do, you are missing some gorgeous artwork and great stories if you don't. And Ellen my dear, I hope the wait has been worth it.

Watercolour over a pencil sketch, 2004. And the scanner just mangled this completely, eating up all the subtleties and making it seem much more blobby than it really is. *pouts*

Wow... How did you make the wings so blindingly brilliant? I feel like i'm really looking at a celestial being. This is an amazing picture, bravo.

You should do more watercolours. Great work with the light in the wings.
