Before I drew this picture, I had a background story in my head. This is an elf who lives with a small clan in a remote arctic area. She's lived there her entire life; she knows absolutely nothing about the world outside her village. This is until one day, a group of adventures stumbles upon them. The clan rejects the newcomers, wishing to continue their isolated existence. This elf, however, is amazed and driven to see the rest of the world. She goes with the group (who look odd to her, since they're not elves) against her family's wishes. I wanted to show her when she first sees the outsiders... soo.. voila! =]

The picture was too big for my (first and new!) scanner so I had to piece it together on the computer. I think it's a little off. =/

Oh, she doesn't have a name...Any ideas?

Nice shading! I like her hair and her surprised, quizzical expression. There is something about the corners of her mouth that bugs me, but it might just be me being weird. As for names, well, here are some random suggestions that I think suit her: Adalgisa, Alise, Amalie/Amaline, Amandine, Amanya, Ayanna, Lilias, Linsey, Liridona, Silvie/Sylvie or perhaps Talisa/Talise.

:-) Samantha Martin replies: "Thank you! I’m glad i got that expression. Yeah... her mouth bugs me too, you’re not being wierd. Something’s wrong there. =/ Oh well. Oooh, i love all those names! I really like Ayanna. It’s perfect. =]"

You’ve shown great emotion in her face =), but I’m more unsure what kind of feeling she express, I think it looks more like fear (but that maybe is the first emotions the elves got?), but still some determination, the closed mouth and the eyes... argghh! quizzical is the word! haha, more even, the hair looks amazing 1.
Work well done!

:-) Samantha Martin replies: "Thank you, this comment made my day! =] I would imagine she was a little scared at first but quizzical is the exact feeling I was going for. =]"

Oh very, very nice! You’re quite good with the pencil. Better then I. Anywho, fantastic picture!
The hair is shaded excellently. The story behind the picture is very good too.

hello! great shading, especially in her hair. i think her lips are shaped and shaded perfectly, actually, but they may be a bit wide, so that may be what nemo was seeing. But i do love the look in her eyes. that small reflection of light in them adds so much life to the piece. great job.

Her eyes show she is innocent and vulnerable, but has the internal fortudude to see her through the experiences she will find. A beautiful portrait.

:-) Samantha Martin replies: "thank you so much! i’m really glad you like her. 1"
