This is a bit of concept work for my book. This was intended to be a character study for my main elvish character, but I don't think it quite captures his spirit. Still, it made a good study. I like working with graphite and Q-tips. Q-tips are my best friend ever, though I did a bit of manual shading on his ear and such. Lots of fun to draw, those elves.

More on the character later (I hope). The book, as of yet, is untitled. Tell me what you think!

Wow that’s really good in all its simplicity. Whenever i try to do a drawing without a lot of shading it ends up looking childish.

:-) Sarah Charles replies: "Thanks a lot! Q-tips really help with shading."

I LIKE IT! 2 questions- wat r Q-tips and where can you get them from?

:-) Sarah Charles replies: "Thanks very much!
Q-tips are... good grief, what are they?
You can get them from pretty much any drug store, and they look like little sticks with cotton balls on either end, I suppose."

lol, I believe the generic name for Q-tip is "cotton swab". Perhaps that would help the poster above, who probably does not speak English as a first language.

You do such beautiful linework, and I love the subtlety of your shading. You manage to convey a sense of volume while being very sparing with value which gives this a very graphic quality.

There is one detail you might keep in mind for next time - find someone who will pose for you and look carefully at the eye in profile. You will see that the pupil does not actually touch the forward edge of the eye - the iris extends ahead of it, sort of a clear bubble over the pupil. It’s a minor thing, but it will help give you a bit more realism.

:-) Sarah Charles replies: "Thanks! I’ll try to find a model, or at least a few reference photos! (I wondered what was off.)"

Shame that picture is so white, but I like his ear 11

:-) Sarah Charles replies: "Thanks! I tend to keep my concept art blank until I know exactly where it’s going to fit into the story. (I like his ear, too!)"
