Legend say's that when a snake steals the egg of a cock, then a basilisk will hatch from it... This is the original form of a basilisk, some will see it as a cockatrice... I like his baleful stare... You'd really think, that one glance could turn you into stone, eh? Done in ink

ah yeah, the age old conundrum, "Is it a Basilisk or a Cocatrice" sort of like the Butter Battle Bo-wait that is a horrible example cause butter side up is right... ummm.... Anyhoo, Basilisks/Cockatrices are always cool, I especially dig his feathers, and his nifty feet. KUTGW

Excellent detail with both feathers & scales. You have a wonderful talent with ink!

Wow... (JK!) This is incredibly detailed. The scales, feathers and comb are very well done. *shivers* I feel stone-cold at least. Very realistic and very frightening. Just needed to thank you for all the lovely nightmares I'll have tonight. ^_~ Draw more dragon-demons?

Your attention to detail is marvelous. This drawing is also very clean. It must have taken a long time. I also like how you use the tail to make him appear more serpentine, and also how you use it to balance out the picture.

cooooooooooool And thank for the permission to take it on my webside!

Actually, AD&D said that cockatrices & basilisks can petrify... They kill, not petrifry... And the main difference between a basilisk and a cokatrice is that a basilisk can kill with it's breath, and a cockatrice can kill with but a glance... Or was it the other way around? Anyhow, I like this fellow very much... Can I use him as a dual-purpose weathervane-salesperson repellant? Also, here's another fun fact... The legend of the basilisk may have comes from the description of a snake called the "basilieus" by Pliny, I believe. He spoke of a snake in the depths of Africa that was said to have a red spot on it's head. A cobra, perhaps?

I don't know what legends your lookin' at in Harry Potter or whatever but the simple fact is that your wrong. This picture is a Cockatrice, the Basilisk looks nothing like this. The Basilisk from the original version of AD&D 1st edition and second edition is that it is a lizard approximately 7-12 feet in length and over 4-5 feet high whose scales are made of almost pure stone so it is a very hard foe to defeat with plain weaponry. The guy was close with the legend but was backwards where the basilisk's gaze could turn it's victim into stone and the breath of a Cockatrice can petrify them. Note petrify and stone are two entirely different things. I have the

:-) Birgit Sauder replies: "Well, well.. when I was referring to "legend", I certainly didn't mean the AD&D Monster's Manual or Harry Potter. Believe it or not, there are some descriptions way older than that... But some people always want to know better and have to wipe it in your face *sighs* In the original legends, the Basilisk was described as a serpentlike creature with the head of a cock, sometimes with legs, sometimes without. I was wrong in one thing I admit. Like Stanton stated above very correctly, a basilisks gaze kills, not petrifies. The form of my basilisk is mythological correct, thank you very much."

This is a fantastic picture of a basilisk, probably the best I've seen! The people who keep complaining that it is NOT a basilisk because it has a lot of cockrel in it simply don't have any imagination whatsoever. I have a book all about mythical creatures, and it has a picture of a basilisk in it, and it has almost the exact same body as your basilisk, so you've done NOTHING wrong.
Why the hell are people saying it isn't a basilisk anyway? Have they SEEN a basilisk? A creature that has never been seen by human kind can be anything you can it to be, because it doesn't exist! Silly children..10
This is 100% basilisk, but it is an original basilisk of your own design! ^^ Well done! Its beautiful! So all the people who are complaining can stuff themselves 1
