The Familiar Dragon is the first of a series of artwork I did for my AP art portfolio four years ago. The main idea of the paintings in this series was a contrast between style and subject. The former being of 19th century biological and informative type with details on classification and general anatomy; the latter being of purely fanastical and imaginative origin with emphasis on the unreal and mythical. The series is done in watercolour and black ink pen. This particular scetch is one of my favorite... although simple and probably lacking in composition and realism, it is the source of the genuine idea and is, in a way, representative of the entire series... the starting point... and what better starting point than the typical green dragon?

I really like the whole notion of fantasy creature study and you've done an excellent job. Reminds me of something darwin would do. Amazing use of the water colour wash, i could never quite master that. Looks like an authentic vintage picture. What did you get on your AP tests?

You know it looked really good from far away where, nobody could see it. It looks like a half bat, half lizard, and half rat all at the same time. Is it a dragon? Sorry, but you can't really tell.

:-) Simone G. Des Roches replies: " Excellent. That's exactly the kind of imaginative synthesis I was going for. See, the thing about dragons, is everyone sees them differently, if they can see them at all. It is kind of a ratty looking beast eh?"

Agent Black Dragon, how can you think it's cute! What's wrong with you? And the pic- well, it looks like a starved lizard with horns and wings. Again, with the orange background? Think you would have learned...*sigh*
