This one goes out to the one I love
This one goes out to the one I've left behind
A simple prop to occupy my time
This one goes out to the one I love...

'He distracts himself from the agony of his broken leg by singing, grateful that they have left him his music, if nothing else. His two greatest joys, the love of his life and the music that is the language of his soul, intertwine into an almost tangible web of hope and pain, sorrow and regret and completion. He is here because he would not abandon his belief in freedom, and he has no regrets save one: that he will never see her face again. Perhaps a faint whisper of his song will reach her ears and bring her the ghost of her lover, for he dies at dawn.

In the east, the sky begins to lighten...'

A fairly large painting, on textured watercolor/pastel paper. The story began to tell itself as the picture came to life, and I suspect we'll be seeing a comic version of it someday. Does he die this morning, or will he be rescued? I'll leave it up to you ... and yes, his leg is broken and twisted. And yes, those stones are all done by hand with many colors, and yes this took forever. But I love it so much. No ink, just pencil and watercolor. It had been a while since I painted... so when once again I felt the urge to illustrate a song, this one almost flowed out. Please be gentle with criticism.

:-) Lauren 'Selie' Liebowitz replies: "Yep, they took a loooooong time..."

I really like this pic....the stones... so mosaiky...
this pic makes me kind of emotional... I really love the way he sits there quietly singing to himself.... the music all that makes him feel better...

:-) Lauren 'Selie' Liebowitz replies: "It's supposed to be a quietly emotional piece - no big sweeping pain or misery or anything, just something small and deeply personal. I'm glad you like it."

At least they let him keep his instrument 1 A very beautiful and emotional picture...I love the coloring on the stones and on his skin...little details like the crack in the masonry by the window...all very well done. I love your gallery! Thanks for visiting me.

:-) Lauren 'Selie' Liebowitz replies: "Ooh, I'm glad someone noticed the details! I spent far too many hours working on this, and it's nice that people can see the details in it (I'm usually bad about leaving details out in backgrounds). Thanks for the kind words."

Oh, sad!!! Very moody. Nice facial expression and for some odd reason I really like his right hand.

This is an amazing piece of work, the details are astounding and the emotions... I love it!

:-) Lauren 'Selie' Liebowitz replies: "Thank you! I worked very hard on it."

Omg, when i read what you wrote and looked at your pic i almost cried, my heart welled up with absolute sadness. I know how it feels to be completely in love with someone and i couldn't imagine living without him, i feel so sad for him...*cries*

:-) Lauren 'Selie' Liebowitz replies: "I really hope I never have to know this pain firsthand - it would be very nice if nobody did. But in a work of fiction, it's a great source of emotional interest. But yes, love can be a wonderful thing. Thank you for the comment~"

I. Love it.

First off: I appreciate all the details you put into this. Those stones must have taken forever. And to successfully draw a broken leg; kudos.

But what really gets me about this picture is the expression on his face. It’s like he doesn’t have enough emotion left inside next to the love and the pain to feel hate. His face is so endearing, and my heart goes out to him. That he can keep hoping, and choose to feel love for his Love over hate for the ones who’ve imprisoned him, is just...it makes my heart swell!

Beautiful work.

:-) Lauren 'Selie' Liebowitz replies: "Wow, thank you. That’s a really touching reaction to this piece (which I still consider one of my favorites, one of my personal bests, and one of the most emotional images I’ve ever created) and it means a lot for me to hear that from you. Really. Thank you."
