Fred was born in Colorado. When he turned two, he moved to California, where he has lived almost all his life. His family continued to move through numerous houses during his early childhood. His family finally settled down in a large Palo Alto, California. He lives there now, speculating on what will become of the man who came up with the idea type in "Elf" and "Wood" into the Google homepage when he was bored.
