This was an assignment for my creative writing class. We had to describe the 'essence of a setting' in 100 words or less and it ain't easy. I decided to describe a fairy-tale castle. I may turn this into a real story. I have a few ideas, but for now, I think it can stand alone just fine!

It was smaller than other castles, but graceful and appealing, with a brook dancing beside the border wall. Into the wall a large scrolled gate was set, and above the gateway was an ornate arch over-run with friendly ivy. Indeed, the wildly beautiful gardens and the surrounding greenery had not been tamed by the trained hand of a gardener for many years.

Magic sparkled on every available surface like a thin layer of chalk, the golden spires of the symmetrical turrets gleaming with dulled warmth beneath the confines of the potent dust. Even abandoned, the aged bricks bearing the weight of the massive structure seemed to hum with impish delight. The castle was lonely, yearning for the spell to be broken so the empty rooms and drafty corridors would once again be filled with life and music.

Yet the unnerving silence engulfed the surrounding hillside where the castle stood elegantly against the backdrop of a radiating sunset. Not a sad place, nor happy either, a sighing breeze ruffled through the spacious halls.

Never changing, but always hoping. The castle waited.

Nice description . . . you paint the image of the castle as well as the silence that hangs over it. Nicely done!

Neat.

I'd like to read a story that goes along with this.

I did something spontaneously for just myself somewhat like this. Only the place that I described seemed externally pleasant, but with something really, truly wrong with it.

Go figure.

But this is much much better than mine. Not that you'll ever see mine. Even if I do get a spot at Wyvern's, that one isn't likely to appear.

I hope you got an A+ on this, it is very beautiful. Feels like I'm right there! I especially like the last line. Yes I did get an A+ on this assignment and in the class, which was no easy feat let me tell you! Thanks for stopping by! I'm glad you liked it!!

"tamed by the trained hand of a gardener..."
My hat is off to you, Lady. this is GOOD. I really love the imagery. We can really see the castle, feel the wind, hear the silence, and smell the ivy(and yes, Ivy has a smell, just because I know someone will ask).
Want more. ::dances along to the next work of genius::

I loved creative writing class; it seems like you do to (if not, you certainly made the most of your misery). This is very good, and its very original. I love the description with the image of "a thin layer of chalk", that is really imaginative and probably one of the most vivid images I've read in a long time. This truly is excellent and I can find nothing wrong with it. Keep up the excellent work.

Oh my goodness.
I'm speechless.

The line 'Magic sparkled on every available surface like a thin layer of chalk,' was just ... incredible. Wow.

Amazing work. This is the best description I have read. I spent ages on the Internet trying to find a good description of a castle and this is the best one. Wow! You must become an author. This is really good and shows your knowledge of dreaming up imaginary places. Great work.

What are you talking about?!? She IS an author! 1 (And a wonderfully descript one, too - specially love her vampire story which I would love a third chapter too... HINT HINT.)

Wow. This is an amazing description. You can read it and the reader is interested, involved, drawn in. Not bored like so many other descriptions that last half a page.

This has a very nice touch to it. You have the pen of an artist!!
