The Mummy’s Smile

On loan from The Dutch National Museum for Antiquities.

Blessed Amun-Re!
I still remember the sun shining through my bones.
I ate pomegranates, stuffed dates and barley cakes.
I wore Pharaoh’s gift-necklace of purple stones.
And sometimes I saw a crocodile
slither silently into the Nile.

Blessed Osiris!
Now I only feel cold light beneath the glass.
Now I eat the words of children passing by.
Now I wear the decay of time preserved.
And sometimes I see two lovers embrace
behind the column next to the E X I T sign.

Sometimes I feel a bit irked when people put bodies on display ... these were humans who had a life of their own, and now they are a tourist attraction. You really captured that here, the first stanza with his life in Egypt, and the second where he's stuck in what I presume to be a museum or something of the like.
