(I)
Golden brow and silver eyes
And go you lightly round the glen.
Who passes through the leafy door
Will never more be seen by men.

(II)
Tread lightly by the forest door
Nor sing by the owl's window sill.
Who dances by the twilight's tune
Goes into darkness singing still.

(III)
Once my mother bade me see
Who whispered at the window pane,
Close against the shutters pressed,
And not to let them call in vain.
Twice my mother bade me go
To the door to see who stood
Knocking gently, so and so,
Tapping on the hollow wood.
Once I told her, 'tis the wind.
Twice I answered, 'tis the storm.
Oh do not bid me lift the latch,
The night is cold, the hearth is warm.
Once she started from her seat,
Twice she hurried to the door,
The third time lifted up the latch,
Stepped outside and was seen no more.
