You might want to try working in layers, with the stallion on top and the background on the bottom. This way you can add some lighting and contrast to make the stallion stand out against this great background...he gets lost, as the background is almost the same color as he is. Choose a light source, then add shadows & highlights according to the direction the light is coming from. Or use a color variation to make him stand out...possibly a bluer background and a blacker stallion or even make the stallion a dark, deep purple...anything to separate him from the background. You made a comment about how sharp it looked against the backround. I believe (not 100% sure) that you might be able to fix that using a feather technique i learned on photoshop.
It looks fine, though.
