Captain Nemo, also known as Prince Dakkar, is a character created by Jules Verne, whom he featured in 2 novels: 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (1870) & The Mysterious Island (1874). Nemo was the son of an Indian Raja & a scientific genius who roams the depths of the sea aboard his submarine, the Nautilus.
Nemo outwardly projects a stern, controlled confidence but is wracked by remorse over deaths of his crew members & even of enemy sailors. He believes that they have all been driven to sea because there was no fitting & proper place for them on land.
This illustration features Nemo aboard the Nautilus, the Mermaid is seen through the viewing glass. I imagined the Mermaid acting as his guide through unexplored realms of the deep.
