The F/A-86 Harpy was built in the late 2030's as a communications relay platform for fleets of unmanned air vehicles (UCAVs).  When space weaponry became more commonplace the U.S. found it could no longer rely on satellites to control the UCAVs and thus commissioned the harpy.

While it was not built as a fighter the harpy is very capable of defending itself.  It can carry missiles as well as communications pods and comes with two F144 pulse detonation engines each capable of producing 50,000 pounds of thrust.  It also carries an antiaircraft gun.  Perhaps most frighteningly of all the harpy can call dozens of UCAVs to its aid.

When China developed a electromagnetic pulse weapon capable of frying even hardened electronics, such as those that control the UCAVs, the U.S. took back many of the harpies and gave them redundant control systems and larger weapons in case an agressive nation managed to procure such emp weapons.

These modified harpies have still never entered battle without their electronics, but there have been many worrisome reports of harpy pilots being forced to rely on backup controls after their computers mysteriously failed over the Indian ocean.  Whether or not this is mere coincidence or something more sinister is unknown.

Of further interest is the Harpy E, which is a heavily modified harpy built by the EU.  Unlike the American version the Harpy E boasts two Rolls Royce engines that produce less thrust but are capable of diverting thrust for shorter takeoffs.

Excellent picture, id like to see a more revealing angle of the aircraft, though is does look very capable from this one 2. I love creating/drawing imaginary aircraft too, though i dont have any up yet. One thing i hate is when an artist presents an excellent picture, then simple says "Done with pens and pencils" for a description. No such short comings here, the description alone deserves a Mods choice! Is the information in the description all of your own making? If so im impressed, and extreamly inspired. Great work all round

1 Sarah Taylor replies: "Thank you! Most of the information is made up, though I've taken a lot of inspiration from working at Pratt&Whitney as an intern, and from my obsessions with the history channel."

The whole picture's nice (understatement). But I like the clouds most of all, they're sooo, cloudy. I mean they have presence, did you use a reference cause the details amazing you can even see the rain underneath over the ocean.

:-) Sarah Taylor replies: "I used a lot of different reference pictures, mostly to see how the light reflects off the clouds, nothing too specific though. The rain was actually the easiest part! I made a bunch of dots and motion blurred them to look like rain, that was it! 1"

It's not just the clouds that make the picture, it's the rain underneath. I also like the corrosion, stains, and marker light on the bow of the carrier.
