Minerva's Curse

Foolish girl!
Comparing yourself to me.
Claiming to surpass my beauty.
For this you shall pay!

Tonight you will lay down to sleep
And in the morning awake
To find fangs in place of teeth
Protruding from your face.
Your skin golden scales shall be
And your hair a den of snakes!

Great wings you shall grow
To carry you far and wide
Spreading dread and sorrow
Throughout the countryside.

All who gaze upon you
Shall never turn away
For into stone they shall turn
And like a statue stay.

One thing alone I will concede
So you may one day be freed
I will not curse you with the gift
Of Immortality.

Oooohhhh! I like it! You create such a beautiful picture with so few words, truly you are talented! Have you seen Nathan Lyon's picture of Medusa? That's my favorite one of her in particular, I've got him linked in my gallery if you're interested ^^

:-) Steve Doyle replies: "I justed checked that out. Nice picture--Mod's choice winner, too. Thanks for pointing that out."

Well done. You made me read poetry. A difficult task indeed. You create a very vivid picture with your words.

wow, you're good. No, I'm not dense and I didn't just realize that. I just was mentioning a fact, because you are gooooood.

oh cool! i thought medusa _was_ immortal though? i mean, she was a goddess or something wasn't she? except, i know she COULD be killed... because she WAS... but you would think she would TRY to kill herself... interesting, your poem made me think, yes it did!

:-) Steve Doyle replies: "Here's an interesting part of the story: Medusa had 2 sisters that WERE immortal--in fact it was important that Apollo pointed out to Perseus which one was Medusa, because she was the only one who could be killed. I've never found an explanation for why her 2 sisters were also turned into Gorgons or why they were immortal. Medusa was the one bragging about her beauty."

Again, I'm awed by your ability to craft mythological references into modern writing. I'm gonna hafta pick up a book on myth and try my hand at that one of these days . . .

Amazing poem! You have quite the gift. I had never thought of the Medusa as the victim before, but yeah...this really drove the point home and made me think about it.
